This brand was created in the year 1913 by the world famous R.J. Reynolds. This creative genius in his endeavor to create a new tobacco product worked on pre-packaged cigarettes. His efforts paid off in the form of Camel cigarettes, this brand was the first mass produced pre-packaged cigarette. He also tirelessly worked on the taste aspect of the cigarette and also on its look and feel. His creation was so named because it used a Turkish paper, in imitation of fashionable while Egyptian cigarettes. The maker hit the bull's eye and the sales of this new brand skyrocketed, and a year later it was reported that R.J. Reynolds sold 425 million packs of Camel cigarette. In the early twentieth century Camel cigarettes were considered to be a very mild tobacco product, but the same brand with minor changes is today labeled by the users as a very strong brand.
R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company took various steps to popularize this brand; they used numerous promotional slogans to attract more people towards this product. One of the slogans read "the Camels are coming" which was similar to an old Scottish song, "The Campbells are coming." Their advertisement campaign was an attempt to influence public opinion that coincided with the United States' entry into World War I, and later World War II. Another promotional activity was the use of camel called "Old Joe." The company used to drive trucks around the town with a picture of "Old Joe" and give out few free cigarettes. The picture of Joe Camel was also printed on billboards, at local bars, magazines, clubs and other print media.
